Western Québec School Board

Diploma Requirements

The Minister awards a Secondary School Diploma (SSD) to students who earn at least 54 credits at the Secondary IV and V level. Among these credits, there must be 20 credits at the Secondary V level, divided as follows:

Sec. V English 6 credits
Sec. V French (second language) 4 credits
Sec V Ethics & Religious Culture or Phys. Ed 2 credits
Sec. IV History & Citizenship 4 credits
Sec IV Math 4 credits*
Sec. IV Science 4 credits*
Sec IV Arts Education 2 credits

For students coming from outside the Province of Québec:

If you arrive in Québec in your graduating year (as a Secondary V student), the ministère de l’Éducation, de l’Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche (MEESR) will grant retroactive credits at the secondary IV level for most courses successfully completed at the Secondary V level.  The MEESR does this in order for students to be able to meet the required 54 credits for graduation.  History and Science used to be an exception, however, the MEESR may grant an equivalency (rather than a credit) for Canadian History if the course is successfully completed in another Canadian province.  As of June 2012, the Ministry will also grant Science IV credits if the student is able to pass either Chemistry V or Physics V. It should be noted that it is not guaranteed.  An application through the school is required and the Ministry reserves the right to make the final decision regarding any accreditation.
