Homeschooling Process – Tips for parents:

Homeschooling is an option available to all parents under the Education Act.

Families interested in this option need to contact Dr. Marian Lothian, Director of Educational Services for the WQSB at the board office, who oversees homeschooling

Perspective families should inform themselves by reading the Québec Government Policy Framework for Home Schooling which outlines the duties and responsibilities of all stakeholders, and review the Québec Education Program for the grade levels of the children to be home schooled. Both electronic links can be forwarded from our director’s office

The educational yearly plan for each child to be homeschooled needs to be forwarded to the WQSB for approval prior to the start-up of the school year, and general guidance is offered to families as needed

The planning, textbooks, and learning materials are the responsibility of the homeschool family.

Once approved for homeschooling, students are to be evaluated annually within their local community school during term 3 (April to June). Results are given to parents in order to provide feedback as to how the student is progressing academically.

Governing Board Participation

Parents who wish to participate on the school/centre’s governing board may do so by informing the school administration in early September. Each governing board names a parent representative to the central Parents’ Committee by September 30.

Daycare Fees 2015-2016

Elementary schools of the Western Québec School Board that offer daycare services in the morning, during lunch, and after school are subject to the rules and regulations governed by the Ministère de l’Éducation, de l`Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche (MEESR). Consequently, the daycare fees (parent contribution fee) have been indexed for this school year.

They are as follows:

  • Effective July 1, 2015, the daily fee (for daycare services) will increase from $ 7.30 to $ 8.00. This rate will also be indexed as of January 1, 2016;
  • Effective July 1, 2015, the daily fee for PD days will increase from $8.00 to $16.00.

School Board Programs

Regrettably the school board will not be renewing some of its programs/activities this year because of the recent budget cuts to school boards and the adoption of its 2015-2016 budget.

To name a few, the Destination Imagination Program and the English Debating Competition will not be offered this school year. Nonetheless, we will be hosting another edition of Music Makers which is scheduled for April 15, 2016 at D’Arcy McGee/Symmes High School (Aylmer sector).

Update on Working Conditions – Pressure Tactics

As you may be aware, provincial and local collective agreements came to an end last March. As a result, all of our unionized personnel is currently working without a renewed working contract (collective agreement).

As we are heading into a new school year, the union President of the Western Québec Teachers’ Association (WQTA) has informed the school board that we are to expect pressure tactics from the teachers’ union as early as the start of the school year.  In light of these pressure tactics, parents are to be reassured that these occurrences will minimally impact the school organization and that our schools and centres will remain a safe learning environment.

With respect to the extra-curricular activities organized and planned within the schools and centres, the union will not be encouraging nor discouraging teacher participation in these activities. As these activities are carried out on a voluntary basis, participation will be a personal choice of the teacher.

Please rest assured that in the event of strike action, parents and students will be notified.

Chair's Welcome Message

Greetings and best wishes to all at the beginning of this new and exciting school year. The motto at the Western Québec School Board is “Our future begins here”. Those of us involved in education have a wondrous opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child. This is our challenge no matter what is our assignment or responsibility. All of us are privileged to be in a position to interact with a student, and our challenge is to make that a positive relationship. We are all involved in the learning process and we have that opportunity to make a difference.
My challenge to you this year is to make that difference. While focusing on the positive opportunities that you have every day you can seize those moments that will make a marked difference on the students as learners. Learning is not restricted to the classrooms nor is it the exclusive domain of teachers. Teachers are charged with classroom learning and everything that you do outside the classroom also impacts on students. Those who are not in the classroom must also realize that we too impact on students. We are all involved in the learning process and I challenge you to make that difference this year.

There is no question that there are significant collective agreement challenges that will attempt to divert us from our real tasks of education. Professional engagement in the resolution of our differences must be approached and resolved in a positive and productive manner without impacting on our commitment to providing the best possible learning opportunities for all.

As Chair of the Western Québec School Board, I am committed to being engaged with you in making a difference. I am asking the same from each and every employee. Together we can make a difference.

In the words of Dr. Seuss
“You’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting,
so… get on your way!”

You are not alone on the mountain.

Jim Shea
